Painted traditional kitchens: doors and construction

A painted traditional kitchen combines a door profile, colour, handles and surrounding materials into a particular character. The finish method and the cabinet construction should be specified separately. Hand painting is one possible route, while some completed JS DECO projects use spray-finished doors. Clear descriptions help you choose the result you want without confusing appearance with how it is made.
Choose the traditional details you want
Framed doors, glazed cupboards, visible handles and selected open shelves can establish a classic direction. Their proportions and placement determine how decorative or restrained the furniture appears. Compare the details with the room's existing architecture rather than treating every traditional feature as compulsory.
The Pudsey extension project combines painted oak doors with solid oak shelves and an oak-and-quartz island surface. The cabinetry was developed around an L-shaped run and separate island, with practical appliances and storage in the perimeter.
Agree what 'painted' means in the specification
A painted surface should be described by its substrate, preparation and finish system, with the method agreed. Hand-applied and spray-applied finishes can differ in appearance and maintenance expectations. Ask to see the intended sample rather than relying on a generic 'hand-made' or 'hand-painted' label.
The classic Pudsey kitchen has spray-painted oak doors. The framed fronts, glazed storage and island details show how a painted traditional appearance can be developed using a spray-applied finish.

Our painted kitchen page sets the discussion within the current offer. A project-specific specification confirms the finish to be supplied.
Keep the cabinet core in the conversation
The paint colour does not tell you what is inside the cabinet or beneath the door surface. High-quality plywood is our preferred premium cabinet construction. Door materials, profiles and painting method are developed alongside that structure, fittings and edge details.
Historical painted projects may have different construction. The Pudsey extension used oak-veneered MDF carcases, while the Cawthorne kitchen combines birch plywood cabinetry with painted moisture-resistant MDF fronts. Preserve those actual specifications rather than assuming all painted furniture shares the same build.

High-quality real-wood-veneered MDF is also a premium door-only option where a veneered appearance is wanted. These doors can be paired with our preferred plywood cabinet construction.
Make the classic exterior work in daily use
- StorageAllocate drawers, cupboards and larders to the food, pans, crockery and small appliances they will contain.
- OpeningCompare the handles and fittings on the intended fronts, including larger doors and frequently used drawers.
- Worktops and splashbacksCheck the actual samples beside the door colour, with care, joints and edge details understood.
- LightingCombine the traditional character of visible fittings with suitable light over the working surfaces.
The storage guide and classic kitchen ideas article examine these practical choices in more detail. A traditional look need not mean inaccessible cupboards or a layout chosen only for symmetry.
Consider care and longer-term changes
Ask for the care instructions for the selected paint and substrate. Suitability for touching up or refinishing depends on the actual system and existing condition; paint does not make every repair invisible or every colour change straightforward.
Environmental claims also need product evidence. A water-based or low-VOC description is not, by itself, proof that a whole kitchen is environmentally preferable or will improve health. Material sourcing, manufacture, use and maintenance are separate considerations. The sustainable material guide helps frame those questions without replacing product documentation.
Questions about painted traditional kitchens
Is every bespoke painted kitchen hand-painted?
No. Bespoke manufacture describes how the furniture is developed for the project. The painting method needs its own specification.
Can a traditional kitchen use plywood cabinets?
Yes. The cabinet core and traditional visible finish are separate choices. High-quality plywood is our preferred cabinet construction.
Can painted doors be refreshed later?
Often this can be assessed, but the existing substrate, paint system, condition and intended new finish determine the appropriate process.
