This project represents a balance between traditional Shaker proportions and carefully integrated modern functionality. Designed and manufactured from scratch in our workshop, the cabinetry follows classic architectural principles while incorporating contemporary storage systems and detailing.

Unlike factory shaker kitchens based on fixed modules, this project was developed as a fully bespoke scheme. Every cabinet was dimensioned specifically for the space, allowing us to optimise proportions, maximise internal storage and maintain clean visual rhythm throughout the room.

What Defines a True Classic Shaker Kitchen

Shaker design is often reduced to a simple framed door with a recessed centre panel. In reality, authentic Shaker furniture is defined by proportion, restraint and structural integrity. The width of rails and stiles, the depth of framing, the balance between wall and base units and the visual weight of the island all play a critical role.

Because all cabinetry was produced from scratch, we were able to control these proportions precisely rather than adapting pre-determined factory sizes. This is the fundamental difference between modular and fully bespoke furniture manufacturing.

Plywood Core Construction for Structural Longevity

The carcasses were constructed from 18mm birch plywood, providing significantly greater rigidity compared to standard MFC systems. Full thickness backs and rigid assembly ensure long term structural stability.

You can learn more about our approach to structural build quality on our Plywood Core Kitchen Furniture page.

This construction method allows us to combine traditional painted finishes with a modern internal build specification, giving the kitchen both aesthetic depth and long term durability.

Hand Painted Finish – Precision and Surface Preparation

Achieving a refined hand painted finish is not simply a matter of colour selection. Surface preparation, grain sealing, priming and controlled spray application determine the final result. In this project, cabinetry was professionally spray finished to achieve a smooth, consistent surface while preserving subtle detailing in the shaker frames.

Our broader approach to painted cabinetry is outlined within our Luxury Fully Bespoke Hand Painted Kitchens section.

Integrating Modern Ideas into a Classic Layout

While the external appearance remains rooted in traditional design, internally the kitchen incorporates contemporary solutions. Soft close drawer systems, concealed pull outs, integrated waste segregation and carefully planned corner optimisation ensure functionality aligns with present day living standards.

The island was designed not only as a preparation surface but also as a visual anchor within the room. Its proportions were adjusted to maintain circulation space while preserving storage capacity.

Natural Materials and Warmth

Oak laminated worktops introduce warmth and tactile contrast against the painted cabinetry. The subtle texture of wood flooring and tiled splashback reinforces the classic aesthetic without overpowering the space.

Because this was not a system based installation, worktop dimensions, overhangs and appliance integrations were adjusted precisely to the architectural envelope.

Design Development and Technical Planning

Every bespoke kitchen begins with careful spatial analysis and layout optimisation. Cabinet heights, plinth dimensions and service void allowances are all adjusted to suit the property rather than imposed by factory constraints.

Our full planning and refinement process is explained within our Dedicated Kitchen Design Service page.

Classic Form. Modern Performance.

This project demonstrates that traditional Shaker kitchens do not have to compromise on modern performance. By combining plywood core construction, professional spray finishes and precision layout planning, it is possible to achieve timeless visual language with contemporary engineering standards.
